Beer Varieties

Ales – Ranging from gold to amber, ales use a top-fermenting yeast. Often darker than lagers, ales are distinctively fruity and pleasantly bitter. Varieties of ale include: bitter, cream, dark, and wheat.

Lagers – Lagers are bottom-fermented brews of Dutch, German, and Czech origin. They can range from sweet to bitter and pale to black.  Lagers have a “hoppy” flavour and are highly carbonated. Pale lagers are the most consumed beers in the world, including most mass produced American beers.

Stouts and Porters – Stout and porter are both top-fermenting ales brewed with slow fermenting yeast.

Stout is a dark beer featuring a rich, creamy head and is flavoured and coloured by barley. Stout is not as sweet as porter.

Porter is brewed with roasted malt to to impart a black colour and a dry fruity aroma.
