Grape Varieties and Their Characteristics
Cabernet Sauvignon is one of the world’s most popular varieties of red wine grapes. It is grown in nearly every major wine-producing country, from our own Okanagan Valley to Napa Valley to Chile’s Maipo Valley. Cabernet Sauvignon is medium to full-bodied and its flavour profile includes notes of dark cherry, cedar, tobacco, and black currant. It can have an olive or green pepper taste. It pairs well with roasted meats, cream, and butter sauces.
Gamay is a purple grape grown in Beaujolais and the Loire Valley in France. Gamay wines tend to be light, low in alcohol, and high in acidity with cherry notes. This wine is generally meant to be consumed within two years of bottling. Another variety, the Crus of Beauolais, shows aging potential of up to 10 years. Try it with roast chicken or duck.
Merlot is a dark-blue coloured grape grown in the Bordeaux region of France, it is also grown in the US, Mexico, Italy, and Chile. The most widely-planted variety of red wine grape, it is used to make Merlots and to blend with Cabernet Sauvignon. Merlots have a medium body with hints of plum, berry, and currant. Select Merlots have a long aging potential but most are ready to drink in 4 to 8 years. Merlot is a versatile wine when it comes to pairing with food; it can handle red and white meats, pastas, and salads.
Pinot Noir is a black grape variety. Pinot Noir is grown around the world but is mainly associated with the Burgundy region of France. Besides forming the basis of one of the most popular red wines, Pinot Noir, it is also a component in fine Champagnes and California sparkling wines. Pinot Noir has a light body with red fruit notes. It ages well from 3 to 12 years and can be matched with a variety of foods. One of its best pairings is grilled seafood.
Chardonnay is a green grape used to make white wine and was originally grown in the Burgundy region of Eastern France. This variety of grape is a popular component of sparkling wines and Champagne. Chardonnay takes well to oak and can develop vanilla overtones. This wine pairs best with chicken and dishes served with butter and cream sauces.
